It's not obvious to me (damnit, Jim, I'm a statistician, not an
accountant) so what are the reasons for keeping the Brazilian money
off SPI's books?

Tax? Isn't SPI tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code?
