I've submitted several domain names owned by OBF to be transferred to SPI, by sending (as instructed) the requests to hostmaster(at)spi-inc(dot)org(dot) I haven't heard back for more than a month, including not after following up a week ago. So on the one hand I'm worrying whether I'm doing something wrong; but on the other hand I'm also wondering whether domain name and DNS administration is a service that SPI is committed to enough that it can be relied upon. And more than anything else, I just need communication so I can determine whether I better renew the domains at their current registrar or not.

So if anyone here can give me a tip as to what I should be doing or whom I should contact instead, I'd be appreciative.

Nah, I just managed to do something bad with your mail. You got a reply
now.

Now, DNS administration you CAN have with us, but much better is the way
that for example drizzle is using: DNS is with us, but you have commit
access to our puppet repository, limited to your domains files, changes
appear every puppet run on the dns master. (That is, if you want DNS
servers with us, and not just us pointing the NS entries wherever).
That way we CAN take action, but its much nicer if the project can just
do that on their own.

bye, Joerg
No matter how good you are at something, there's always about a
million people better than you.

Actually that's what I meant by DNS administration, so I think this will work great for us.
